Feeding Your Growing Puppy

Puppies have significantly higher calorie needs than adult dogs — up to 3 times their resting energy requirement during the first four months of life. This calculator adjusts the multiplier based on your puppy's age and breed size to match their growth curve.

Small and medium breed puppies typically reach adult size by 9–12 months, while large and giant breeds may continue growing until 18–24 months. Feeding too many calories during rapid growth phases can lead to developmental orthopedic problems, especially in large breeds.

Feed your puppy a food specifically formulated for puppies (or "all life stages"). Large breed puppies should eat a food designed for large breed growth, which has controlled calcium and phosphorus levels.
