Understanding Your Cat's Nutritional Needs
Cats are obligate carnivores, meaning they require animal protein as the foundation of their diet. Our calculator uses the RER formula (70 × body weight in kg0.75) with cat-specific multipliers for activity level and reproductive status.
Indoor cats typically need fewer calories than outdoor cats because they expend less energy. Neutered cats also tend to have lower metabolic rates. Senior cats (11+ years) may need slightly reduced portions, though some older cats actually need more calories due to decreased digestive efficiency.
Unlike dogs, many cats prefer to graze throughout the day. If your cat self-regulates well, free-feeding dry food can work. For cats prone to overeating, measured portions at scheduled mealtimes are recommended.
