Feeding by Life Stage
Puppy
Large-breed puppy formula. Feed 3 times daily. HOD risk means calcium must be controlled — never supplement minerals. Slow growth.
Transition to adult food: 12–18 months
Adult
Need 1,400–2,200 kcal/day. Feed 2–3 meals — NEVER one meal. Very high bloat risk. No exercise near meals. Slow-feeder recommended.
Senior
Reduce calories as activity decreases. Joint support. Continue bloat prevention practices.
Dietary Considerations
Among the highest bloat-risk breeds. Gastropexy strongly recommended. Never feed one large meal. Avoid elevated bowls. No vigorous exercise 1 hour before or after meals. Hypertrophic osteodystrophy in puppies is linked to excessive calcium and energy.
What to Look for in a Food
High-quality protein (26–30%), moderate fat (14–18%), glucosamine, omega-3. Large-breed puppy food is mandatory for growth.
Weight Management
Should be lean and muscular — visible ribs are acceptable in this lean breed. Extra weight increases bloat risk.
