Feeding by Life Stage
Puppy
Giant-breed puppy formula mandatory. Controlled calcium. Feed 3 times daily. Slow growth prevents skeletal problems. Never supplement calcium.
Transition to adult food: 18–24 months
Adult
Need 2,200–3,500 kcal/day. Feed 2–3 meals for bloat prevention. Cardiac-supportive nutrition with taurine and L-carnitine.
Senior
Newfies age early — "senior" by age 6. Joint support and cardiac nutrition are priorities. Maintain lean weight.
Dietary Considerations
Heart disease (SAS, DCM) makes cardiac nutrition essential — taurine, L-carnitine, omega-3. Bloat prevention through multiple meals. Cystinuria (urinary stones) in some lines may require dietary management.
What to Look for in a Food
Giant-breed formula, taurine and L-carnitine for heart, glucosamine/chondroitin, omega-3, controlled calcium in puppy food.
Weight Management
Should be solid but not fat. Extra weight stresses heart and joints enormously at this size. Regular weigh-ins at vet.
