Use Caution — Limited Amounts

Can Bloodhounds Eat Avocado?

The flesh of ripe avocado is not highly toxic to dogs, but the pit, skin, and leaves contain persin, which can cause vomiting and diarrhea. The high fat content can also trigger pancreatitis.

🐕 Bloodhound-Specific Guidance

For a Bloodhound (80–110 lbs), use the standard serving guidance, adjusting to your individual dog's weight and any breed-specific sensitivities.

Bloodhounds are at risk for bloat (GDV). Avoid feeding large amounts of any new food at once, and don't give treats right before or after exercise.

Nutrition Notes

High in healthy monounsaturated fats, potassium, vitamin E, and folate. Very calorie-dense.

Serving Guidance

If feeding avocado, only give small amounts of the ripe flesh. Remove the pit (choking hazard and contains persin), skin, and leaves. Most vets recommend avoiding it entirely.

Risks to Know

Pit is a serious choking and intestinal obstruction hazard. High fat content can cause pancreatitis, especially in breeds prone to the condition. Persin in leaves, bark, and pit is toxic.
