Can Basset Hounds Eat Blueberries?
Blueberries are safe and nutritious for dogs. They are packed with antioxidants, fiber, and vitamins C and K, making them an excellent low-calorie treat option.
🐕 Basset Hound-Specific Guidance
For a Basset Hound (40–65 lbs), use the standard serving guidance, adjusting to your individual dog's weight and any breed-specific sensitivities.
Basset Hounds are prone to obesity. Factor any treats (including blueberries) into the daily calorie total — treats should not exceed 10% of daily calories.
Basset Hounds are at risk for bloat (GDV). Avoid feeding large amounts of any new food at once, and don't give treats right before or after exercise.
Nutrition Notes
High in antioxidants (anthocyanins), vitamin C, vitamin K, manganese, and dietary fiber. Low in calories at about 1 calorie per berry.
Serving Guidance
2–3 berries per 10 lbs of body weight as an occasional treat. Fresh or frozen both work well. Avoid blueberry muffins or products with added sugar.
Risks to Know
May be a choking hazard for very small breeds if not cut in half. Overfeeding can cause digestive upset. Avoid blueberry products with xylitol.
